In order for students to achieve personal, academic and career goals, they need tools and guidance throughout their educational career. Students need to participate in an ongoing process of self-reflection and career exploration. An Academic Career Plan (ACP) is a dynamic, working, collaboratively-created document that allows students to capture the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to achieve academic, personal/social, and career goals. And this year's Summer Leadership Academy will provide an opportunity for school counselors, along with other educators from their districts, to learn more about Academic & Career Plans (ACPs) and to begin developing a customized ACP for use in their districts.
Effective ACP development is a critical and creative thinking process that must involve activities designed to include Self-Exploration, Career Exploration, and Career Planning and Management.
Reggie Newson, Secretary of the WI Department of Workforce Development, will welcome Summer Leadership Academy participants and offer opening remarks. During the morning session, Sara Baird, Assistant Director, WI DPI Career And Technical Education Team; Dr. Gregg Curtis, WI DPI School Counseling Consultant; and Kevin Miller, WI DPI Career Pathways Consultant, will present an overview of the ACP process, describe the benefits of ACPs, suggest the necessary components, and present a model of how school counselors’ roles and responsibilities make them a natural partner in this process. In the afternoon, guided work time for participating teams will be provided. Several school counselors whose districts have implemented ACPs will be on hand to answer questions, render guidance, and offer assistance.
