Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Carolyn Stone

Advocating Legally and Ethically for Marginalized Youth

School counselors can be powerful strategists when applying legal muscle to problems that impact the educational environment. Federal and case law can protect marginalized youth, yet, there are still laws that can hinder counselors’ advocacy efforts. Intervening on behalf of students is infinitely easier if there is a law that provides leverage. This session focuses on the rights of students who are gay or transgender, students in foster care, pregnant students, victims of dating violence, sexual harassment. or bullying. Legal understanding coupled with our ethical imperative to advocate is a formidable combination and increases the odds that counselors will have sway in systemic change and individual support.

About Dr. Carolyn Stone

Carolyn Stone, Ed.D., is a Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education at the University of North Florida (UNF). Dr. Stone is a Past President of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), and in 2010 was presented the ASCA Lifetime Achievement Award. Prior to coming to UNF, Dr. Stone spent 22 years with Jacksonville, Florida’s Public Schools as an elementary and high school counselor, middle school teacher and Supervisor of Guidance Services. She supervised 225 school counselors. Dr. Stone was ASCAs Ethics Chair from 2002 to 2022 and chaired the last four revisions of the ethical standards.

You’re Invited!

Please consider joining us for the National School Counseling Week’s Breakfast Event! This is the fourth annual Breakfast event that the Wisconsin School Counselor Association has hosted, and this provides us an opportunity mid-year to connect as professionals and colleagues (especially since our annual conference has moved to November). We look forward to continuing this new tradition!

This year, we are focusing on the high value that a cohesive relationship between School Counselors and Administration brings to our schools. As an association, we highly anticipate our Keynote speaker Dr. Carolyn Stone’s address- they will certainly be inspiring, and will invigorate our passion for our work as educators! I personally hope that we can experience this speaker together, and continue the conversation afterwards and provide the best support we can for our students.

Check out the details on the Wisconsin School Counselor Association’s website at /nscw-breakfast-2025/.

We also understand that times are busy right now- if you can’t make it to the live event with me, you are able to watch the keynote afterwards if you register in advance. Then, we can meet and talk about it together!

Please let me know what thoughts or questions you have, and I look forward to engaging in this opportunity with you,

XXXX
