Workshop A: Rethinking Behavior: Practical Interventions for the 2026-2027 School Year

Presenter: Cindy Bourget, School Counselor, Elk Mound Middle School

Presentation Description: This one-day Summer Academy workshop focuses on practical, low-cost behavior interventions that are effective, efficient, and realistic for implementation in school counseling programs.

Participants will learn how intentional, skill-based behavior supports can be used to proactively address student needs by explicitly teaching social, emotional, and self-regulation skills. The session introduces a structured, repeatable approach to designing brief, targeted interventions that fit within the time constraints of a typical school day and can be adapted to meet local student needs. When behavioral and emotional skills are taught with purpose and consistency, students are better prepared to engage in instruction and participate positively in their learning environment.

This workshop is designed for school counselors and school-based teams seeking manageable, evidence-informed strategies that align with comprehensive school counseling programs and integrate within existing schoolwide systems and practices.

The content aligns with the ASCA National Model (4th Edition) by emphasizing Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions, intentional program planning, collaboration with school teams, and the use of structured supports to promote student success. The shared strategies also align with ASCA Student Mindsets & Behaviors, with a focus on self-management, social skills, responsible decision-making, and perseverance.

  • Apply structured practice tools to help students develop and reinforce new skills
