We recognize the critical importance of creating a space for counselors to come together not just for content but to collaborate, share experiences and be with colleagues who “get” the challenges and rewards of being a school counselor. WSCA is committed to providing more than just professional development by creating a virtual community of counselors to support each other through these hard times with our online learning program.
This program will include 2 versions, a free and a paid (included for members) version. The free version will offer limited content from our sponsor partners, and the paid version will include more than 80 sessions!

Virtual Job Spotlight Guide (6-12)

Description: COVID-19 restrictions have created a challenging environment for providing interactive Academic & Career Planning experiences. That said, districts have used creativity and technology to continue offering opportunities for students. This guide was developed based on an activity hosted by the Arcadia School District and CESA 4. The event provided a foundation for this guide and provides a ready made example for how virtual job spotlights can occur. While all Job Spotlights were hosted in a single day event, the materials provided in this guide allow for adaptation to individual needs.

Youth Apprenticeship (6-12)

Description: Wisconsin’s Youth Apprenticeship Program is a nationally recognized program, being the first in the country and operating since 1991, we have paved the way for other state administered Youth Apprenticeship Programs. Recently undertaking a modernization effort, all of our competencies have been updated or are being updated. We have added new apprenticeship opportunities such as Broadband Technician and Resident Aide. Currently we are working on Electromechanical, Arborist and others. All of our newly created Youth Apprenticeships offer students a seamless transition into the adult Registered Apprenticeship program and our students receive credit for both the related instruction and the work hours completed during the Youth Apprenticeship.
Youth Apprenticeship is a work based learning program that combines classroom instruction and on-the-job learning concurrently. Students can start their junior or senior year of high school and complete a minimum of 450 hours of work based learning for a one year apprenticeship or 900 hours for a two year apprenticeship. In addition to receiving the Youth Apprenticeship completion certificate, students earn industry recognized certificates making them highly sought after once the Youth Apprenticeship has been completed. Over 80% of Youth Apprentices are offered employment by their sponsoring employer. Over the last 5 years, Youth Apprenticeship has averaged more than 4500 students completing the program in over 55 occupational pathways. Even during the current pandemic, our numbers are on track to match our record breaking numbers last year, and possibly beat them. With our new occupations in IT and Health, employers are looking at Youth Apprenticeship to train their future workforce. Our students are at minimum entry level ready for high demand and high wage jobs employers are desperately trying to fill. Our students have reported that the experience they received in Youth Apprenticeship not only prepared them for the workforce, but that colleges have favored the experience for admissions purposes. Since the related instruction can be taken at the university or technical college, students often can complete a portion of their degree prior to leaving high school all while gaining one to two years of applicable work experience that they can add to their resume when entering the workforce.

Financial Aid- FAFSA Student Level Data (9-12)

Description: In an effort to encourage students to apply, the Department of Education gives states limited accessibility to data in the form of FAFSA application status of high school students which allows school counselors to help and encourage future graduates to take advantage of this program. To this end, DPI works with the Wisconsin Higher Education Aids Board (HEAB) to receive such student data via a data sharing agreement and passes that data onto districts through WISEdash for Districts. Helping Teens Get the Health Care They Need and Deserve (9-12)

Description: Health care professionals can play a key role in the health and development of youth. However, there are unique challenges and barriers that young people face in accessing and receiving health services because of their stage in life – many of which are related to their unique needs and perceptions. Research also reveals an array of communication barriers, stigmas, and gaps in training that interfere with the ability of health care professionals to talk openly and honestly with teens about sensitive health topics.
During this innovative teen-facilitated workshop, trained PATCH Teen Educators will share their accurate and authentic insights into the concerns, preferences and realities that impact the healthcare experiences of today’s youth. Their intent is to educate, engage, and empower health care providers on ways to better connect with teens and prioritize the needs of young people.

"A Trusted Space" Movie Screening (K-12)

Educating the Child with Cancer and the Cancer Survivor (K-12)

Description: The cancer diagnosis of a student can be an overwhelming experience for school staff, as well as for the family involved. Medical advances in recent decades have increased the survival rate of pediatric cancers from 10% fifty years ago to almost 90% today. Many of these survivors, however, have lasting effects as a result of their battle. These late-effects can have a big impact on how survivors learn, how they interact with their teachers and peers, and their lives in general. Teaching a student who is undergoing cancer treatments or who is a cancer survivor requires awareness and understanding to ensure the ongoing education of the student. By participating in this session, you will learn about pediatric cancers, their treatments, and how these experiences affect the children, families, and schools involved.

Description: Giftedness stretches well beyond school performance. Gifted children and youth tend to have specific and intense psycho-social needs and traits. In this session we will briefly discuss factors contributing to the unrest of many of our gifted students. However, we will spend the majority of our time discussing interventions to help them move toward greater success and wellness. Black Girl Blues Strategies to Combat Intra-racial Bullying (K-12)

Description: Have we evolved beyond the brown paper bag test? What does it REALLY mean to be “black” in America today? As long as there have been African-Americans in the new world, this has been an issue up for debate. But for African American girls, these questions of racial identity and physical appearance – light skin vs. dark skin, straight hair vs. kinky hair, etc. – often manifest themselves in ways that are detrimental to them and to other girls. Since 1984, NCMEC has served as the national clearinghouse and resource center for families, victims, private organizations, law enforcement, and the public on issues relating to missing and sexually exploited children. NCMEC also offers a variety of free, age-appropriate online safety materials for families and educators. This presentation is intended to provide an overview of the online safety issues facing children, how to address them, and how to work together to try to prevent them.
