Title:  “Practical Application of the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors to Your Existing School Counseling Program.”

Presenter:  Mark Kuranz is a past-president of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and Wisconsin School Counselor Association (WSCA), worked 34 years as a teacher and school counselor at J. I. Case High School in Racine, WI. He is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, and a lead RAMP and ASCA model trainer.  Mark is an experience presenter and trainer and he has presented at the national, state and district levels. He is described as a quiet leader who enjoys telling stories to illustrate his points.  He counts himself among the lucky to have practiced as a professional school counselor for over twenty years.  ASCA awarded Mark the Mary E. Gehrke Life Time Achievement Award in 2004.  He has been happily married for 38 years and is the father of three children.

Summary:  The "ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Every Student" describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness and social/emotional development.
The 35 mindset and behavior standards identify and prioritize the specific attitudes, knowledge and skills students should be able to demonstrate as a result of a school counseling program. School counselors use the standards to assess student growth and development, guide the development of strategies and activities and create a program that helps students achieve their highest potential.

This workshop helps school counselors to:

  • Operationalize the standards
  • Select competencies that align with classroom lessons, small groups and activities addressing student developmental needs
  • Develop program goals that align with standards
  • Align with the school’s vision and mission.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Transition to the Mindsets and Behaviors
  • Create school program goals that reflect the mindsets and behaviors
  • Discover the importance of student competencies aligned with state standards.
  • Focus on the ins and outs of writing useful competencies.
  • Learn how to navigate the student competencies database to find already-written competencies
