Presentation Description: In this workshop we will provide an overview of school refusal behavior, describe specific helpful and problematic accommodations on the part of the family and school personnel, and discuss how caregivers and schools can work together to promote school success. We will offer specific treatment interventions for anxiety disorders including cognitive behavior therapy-based treatments including exposure, and interventions for maladaptive ways of thinking. Lastly, we will explore and describe how accommodations on the part of family and school personnel work against treatment efforts and provide ways to reduce treatment interfering accommodations.

Travis Nugent

Biography: David M. Jacobi, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who serves as the clinical director for Rogers Behavioral Health in Sheboygan, where he provides supervision and training for its team of behavioral specialists and therapists. Dr. Jacobi specializes in using cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders. Prior to his current role, he was the lead psychologist of Child and Adolescent CBT Services for Rogers Behavioral Health System.

Dr. Jacobi has an extensive practice background in the treatment of anxiety disorders in the United States and Canada and has conducted research related to OCD and anxiety. He received his doctorate from Chicago Medical School, and completed his internship and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Jacobi has presented to numerous clinical and academic audiences at the local, regional, and national levels. He is a member of the International OCD Foundation and has served as one of the trainers for its Behavior Therapy Training Institute, an intensive training course in cognitive behavioral therapy for mental health professionals.

Presentation Description: In this workshop, participants will deepen their understanding of suicide prevention and mental health promotion and supports through content delivery, discussion, collaboration, and activities. Participants will gain insight into data related to student mental health challenges and suicidality. This session will include strategies, supports, tools, and resources for suicide prevention and promoting student mental health aligned with Wisconsin’s School Mental Health Framework to implement universal mental health programming and assist students experiencing mental health struggles. Participants will learn about and explore DPI’s new suicide prevention curriculum and best practices for implementation; this learning will be differentiated by grade level. In this workshop, peer consultancy will be introduced to troubleshoot and brainstorm specific challenges within the school counselor’s role and setting related to student suicidality and mental health challenges. Participants will experience how this valuable tool can be implemented with school staff to expand consultative reach. Key takeaways include: rationale and approaches for promoting suicide prevention and mental health support; practical approaches and tangible strategies; connection, consultation, and support for this challenging and important work; and resources to reference as challenges emerge.

Biography: Andrea Donegan (she/her) is the Education Consultant for School Counseling at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. She is currently supporting education stakeholders in schools, districts, regions, and across the state through consultation and technical assistance with the Student Services, Prevention and Wellness Team. Focus areas including Social and Emotional Learning, suicide prevention, career readiness, school mental health systems, and comprehensive school counseling programming. Support to stakeholders includes facilitation of adult learning through virtual and in-person training, creation and curation of best practice resources, hosting statewide webinars, and providing coaching and professional development academies for school district leadership teams.

Libby Strunz (she/her) is a School Mental Health Consultant for the Department of Public Instruction. Libby began her career in public education as a high school English teacher and later transitioned to being a middle school counselor. As a school counselor, her leadership roles included trauma sensitive schools, equity, social-emotional learning, academic and career planning, and school-based mental health services. She is a certified Trauma Sensitive Schools Trainer and Nurtured Heart Approach Advanced Trainer. As a member of DPI’s Student Services/Prevention and Wellness Team, she provides training and technical assistance in the areas of comprehensive school mental health systems, bullying prevention, and trauma sensitive schools.
